Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Room 8! My name is Beth Haas and I am so delighted to be your child’s teacher this year! I’m excited to start our school year!! Together, we will become a close community, experiencing much joy, growth, and challenge. What an exciting voyage we are about to embark upon! You can find out lots more on our class website http://mrsbethhaas.weebly.com. You’ll find lots of valuable information throughout the year.
During the first week, our goal will be to acclimate to our full school days. We will take things slow and steady and will be doing lots of activities to get to know each other and get back into the swing of things. Starting the second week I will be assigning homework on Monday through Thursday nights. I thought that the children could use an easing-in period during the first week, so instead of written work, I would like them to start getting into the habit of reading at home each night for twenty minutes. On Monday, August 21, I will send home a note fully explaining the homework program. Please also make sure they return their “Brown Bag Autobiography” which I will give to them and explain on Meet the Teacher Day (Tuesday, August 15 from 9:45 - 10:15). If they completed their Summer Work Packet, please make sure to have them turn that in as soon as possible, so I can give them a special recognition.
During the next two weeks we will be busy during our school hours getting to know each other; personally through activities and academically through various assessment tools.
During the school day there will be a number of times when the children will have the opportunity to read silently (we learn by doing). It would be great if the kids could bring some books from home that they enjoy. These will be kept in their desks. They should be rotated regularly so they always have something of interest readily available to them. Their names should be clearly marked on the inside cover so they don’t get mixed up with our class books.
Attached is also a list of recommended, but not required, school supplies. They can bring those items on our first day of school (Wednesday, August 16) or as soon as possible. Please don’t bring those to our “Meet the Teacher” time.
I have a number of special projects and units of study planned for which I may be asking for some donated items throughout the year. I also have many reward systems for the children. If you have any small prizes or party favors you can donate at any time, I'd be very grateful. I try to collect inexpensive prizes throughout the year, but I always seem to be running out of interesting things. The children like special pencils, erasers, stickers, plastic jewelry, baseball cards, or any other little, inexpensive trinkets.
Please reply to this post to let me know you received it. Again, I am looking forward to a wonderful year and getting to know all of you and your children. I hope to see many of them at next Tuesday’s “Meet the Teacher” event!
